Experiment #1:  Details

Accomplish:

Using 3 different Internet connections, we will find the optimal time of day to download a video clip in Windows Media Player format.  We will be downloading the video for Lab #3- LINUX, Part #3 (23:10 to 31:00 minutes- 38 MB).  We found this video clip from http://west.bradley.edu/chuck/spring_2002.htm, and we will be downloading it through Internet Explorer.

Environment:

56-k modem:

We will be downloading this clip from an AOL dial-up connection in East Peoria.  The computer has an Intel Celeron Processor, 63 MB Ram, Windows 98 Operating System, and Internet Explorer 6.0.

Cable:

We will be downloading this clip from a house located on Main Street across from Bradley University.  The cable provider is Insight Communication.  The computer has a 3D Processor, 64 MB Ram, Windows 98 Operating System, and Internet Explorer 6.0.

Ethernet:

We will be downloading this clip from the BCS Lab’s at Bradley University.  The computer has a Pentium II Processor, 130.596 KB Ram, Windows 2000 Operating System, and Internet Explorer 4.0.  The Ethernet link is 3 Com Ethernet Link XL 10/100 PCINIC (3C905-TX).

Testing Times:  We will be testing the download Monday-Sunday.  Our time periods are 8am-11am, 11am-2pm, 2pm-5pm, 5pm-8pm, and 8pm-11pm.  We are making the assumption that 11pm-8am are usually the optimal time to download because most people are asleep at these hours.
